Results of a study by the University of St. Gallen: Insurance companies strive for process optimisations by industrialisation

Cologne/Stuttgart

  • Demand for standardised offers at favourable costs
  • Reduced complexity of the business processes
  • Standardisation and automation are given top priority

In cooperation with the Institute for the Insurance Industry of the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, the Swiss software expert Adcubum conducted a study as to the level of industrialisation in the insurance industry.

Roughly 400 managers from Germany, Switzerland and Austria participated in this study. The objective of the study was to gain a holistic picture of the status quo and of the potential of standardised IT solutions. In the course of the study, the managers were asked to give their opinions on the value-added processes and the strategic challenges for the insurance companies. The result was that process optimisations (36 percent) and sales controlling (33 percent) are the greatest strategic challenges the insurance companies are facing. Within company management, 50 percent of the managers indicated that their wish to reduce internal complexity was the top challenge in the course of an industrialisation of business processes.

The insurance industry in German-speaking countries strives to reach such standardisation mainly through the reorganisation of existing value-added processes within a company. 77 percent of the interviewed companies wish to standardise and centralise as many processes within their company as possible. In the next few years, we must thus expect further standardisation and automation efforts - i.e. an “automation wave” - of the insurance companies’ core processes.
